IGNITION
VOLT IGNITION COILS
The VOLT brand delivers on of the UK’s most comprehensive ranges of ignition coils, which includes over 390 references for over 7600 applications and upwards of 19 million vehicles on the road.
VOLT ignition coils are manufactured to original equipment specifications and then tested in the UK to ensure the consistent high quality expected from a premium quality brand.
All coils are covered by the a no-quibble warranty for complete peace of mind.
WHAT ARE IGNITION COILS
An ignition coil is essentially wire wrapped around a core to make a transformer. This transforms the battery’s low voltage to the thousands of volts needed to create an electric spark in the spark plugs and ignite the fuel.
Traditionally ignition systems consisted of a distributor, mechanical contact breaker points, and a capacitor (condenser.) In modern systems, the distributor is omitted and ignition is instead electronically controlled. Vehicles commonly use one ignition coil for each engine cylinder (or pair of cylinders.)
The VOLT range includes all ignition coil types including:
TRADITIONAL COILS (OIL FILLED / WET COILS / CAN TYPE)
The traditional can type coil still features in our top selling coils. Common in older, classic and vintage vehicles. The oil inside acts as both an insulator and coolant.
VOLT have industry leading experience with this type of coil after supplying the historic Lucas brand for many years, including the iconic gold sports coil.
BLOCK IGNITION (MULTI OUTLET / IGNITION BLOCKS)
Each block/pack includes 2, 4 or 6 ignition coils combined into a single unit.
HT leads are used to connect the outlets of the block coil to the spark plugs. A comprehensive range of HT leads is also available from VOLT.
Single and dual spark versions are included in the range.
Block coils feed voltage to either one or two cylinders simultaneously.
Used in modern systems with no distributor.
PENCIL IGNITION COILS (COIL ON PLUG COILS)
Pencil coils mount directly on top of the spark plug, minimising power loss by feeding voltage straight to the spark plug.
One coil is used per cylinder but some coils have two outlets for use in ‘wasted spark’ systems.
Used in modern electronic ignition systems, these coils require no HT leads and require less space in the engine compartment.
RAIL IGNITION COILS (COIL PACK SYSTEMS)
Fundamentally, a rail coil is a row of pencil coils joined into one component.
The rail sits directly on top of a bank of spark plugs.
Used in modern electronic ignition systems, these coils require no HT leads and require less space in the engine compartment.
