BRAKE AND REVERSE LIGHT SWITCHES

Brake and Reverse light switches are relatively simple devices but play an important roles in a modern vehicles. The switches attache to the pedal mechanisms and fundamentally serve to illuminate the required lights when the pedal is pressed. 

However, they are also linked to the ECU (brake light switches in particular) and many vehicle systems including Push-Button start, Antilock Brakes and Vehicle Stability Control will not operate if the brake light switch is not functioning correctly.

Brake and reverse light switches are available in several forms including mechanical, hydraulic and plunger variations. They are usually always installed above the pedal. The most common symptom of a faulty brake or reverse light switch is when the  lights do not illuminate or they stay on permanently.
